Are NATO members really serious about spending 5 percent of GDP on defense? | DW News

It’s the world’s biggest security alliance, now scrambling to prove it still works. NATO members are set to approve a spending hike to 5 percent of GDP, aiming to revitalize the bloc US President Donald Trump once called obsolete.

Trump is attending the NATO summit in The Hague, ready to bask in praise being heaped on him for pressuring EU states to boost their defense spending. He has repeatedly called on the EU to take more responsibility for its own security.

While the new 5 percent spending pledge is the summit’s key headline, the wording of NATO’s final declaration is still being worked on. Spain has already negotiated an exemption from the spending hike, and other members are looking for carve-outs, too.
