STORYLINE:
India’s Delhi is often said to be multiple cities rolled into one, steeped in history and tradition and yet a modern, dynamic metropolitan hub.

Officially known as the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, the city is federally administered but also has a legislative assembly with elected members.

It includes New Delhi, India’s capital, and the historical old city with its narrow lanes and centuries-old monuments.

India Gate, the 42-meter-high archway of sandstone in the heart of New Delhi, is the city’s most iconic landmark built in 1931 as a memorial to the soldiers killed during World War I.

The mega city is home to the government of the world’s most populous democracy, with the imposing, colonial-era President house and the newly built Parliament house.

Delhi has been the capital of many empires and kingdoms over the centuries and has been destroyed and rebuilt many times.

Its history remains alive in its rich architectural heritage, including the 16th century Humayun’s Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is the final resting place of Mughal Emperor Humayun.

The Mughal history of the city is also represented in old Delhi, with India’s largest and intricately designed mosque Jama Masjid and its towering minarets. The mosque was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and has a courtyard big enough to accommodate 25,000 worshipers.

Not too far from the mosque, stands another UNESCO World Heritage site – the grand Red Fort. Also built by Shah Jahan, the 17th century red sandstone fort was a seat of the Mughal dynasty and a symbol of their powerful empire.
