UNRWA spokesperson slams new US-backed aid system, says it’s made of ‘primarily mercenaries’

The United Nations’ human rights office has slammed Israel for the deaths of hundreds of Gazans trying to get aid through a new delivery system. A spokesman said the Israeli military had repeatedly shot and shelled people as they tried to reach the aid stations. On Tuesday, 27 people were killed at an aid site, according to medics. The UN says over 400 people have been killed near aid hubs since the Israeli and US-backed "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" started operating. That group has denied responsibility for the deaths, and Israel has said it will review some of those incidents. But the UN says an impartial investigation is needed.

The United Nations agency for Palestine refugees, UNRWA, has been a lifeline to people in Gaza. But the agency saw funding cuts after Israel accused it of having ties to Hamas. UNRWA says it could deliver aid much more effectively and safely than the "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" which operates with US and Israeli backing. We speak with Juliette Touma, communications director with UNRWA.
