STORYLINE:
Supporters of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his government took to the streets of Caracas on Thursday in support of Iran, Palestinians and peace in the region.
The demonstrators, many of them public sector employees, marched in solidarity with Iran, waving Iranian flags and carrying images of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Senior Venezuelan officials and several Iranian diplomats also marched, led by Iran’s Ambassador to Venezuela, Ali Chegni.
"The government and people of Venezuela are friends of ours in times of hardship and happiness," said Chegni to the crowd.
Venezuela’s Interior Minister and Secretary-General of the ruling socialist party Diosdado Cabello also joined the rally.
"They have given a slap on the face to the rabid dog of Israel," said Cabello.
Venezuela and Iran have cultivated close ties for more than two decades, dating back to the presidency of Hugo Chávez.
Under Maduro, the alliance has deepened, with Tehran supplying fuel to Caracas during a period of acute shortages and the two countries expanding cooperation in energy, infrastructure, and trade.
