“Yoga does not stem out of Hinduism the way the world sees it today. Hinduism is a very broad scientific knowledge, and yoga is also very scientific. We are, the way we are learning, teaching, and seeing yoga in the world today is barely scratching it at the surface. So, it goes much deeper, the longer you practice, you get to see yoga in a different light every day. It affects you physically, mentally.”

“The biggest disease in coming times will be the mental health, you know because for physical health we are able to get through let’s say medicines to a certain extent but mental health what we can do through meditation by doing gyan yoga which is called you know which is Swadhyay, knowing ourselves. So, we can go to a psychologist, or a psychologist can study us, but if we can study ourselves that is the highest path to being in control of our mind.”

“So, evolution in terms of, you know, if we say, these days now, yoga is being seen only as an Asana. So, if you say, evolution as an Asana, as an exercise, that is a very, let’s say, shallow aspect of yoga. And there’s a lot that the world is going to see and there’s lot that world will discover because they’ve only discovered one aspect of it right now, which is only Asana.”

First practiced by Hindu sages, yoga has become one of India’s most popular cultural exports.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had successfully lobbied the United Nations to designate June 21 as Yoga Day in his first year in power in 2014.
Modi has energetically promoted it as a feel-good way of stretching the country’s influence abroad.
STORYLINE:
Across New Delhi, yoga practitioners gather in groups for outdoor sessions conducted by certified instructors.
Yoga and meditation have roots in Indian culture and scholars say it is an art and science for healthy living.
The word "Yoga" is derived from the Sanskrit language, meaning "to join" or "to unite".
Nakul Sharan, 65, has been a yoga instructor for 25 years.
