"Yeah, it’s actually the last part of the journey. We originally landed in Sicily, for just a vacation, and once the entire war started, our flight got canceled and we decided right away to find a closer destination to go back home. So we flew to Athens, we were there for a week, and then we found a place on the ship, flew again to Larnaca, took a taxi to Limassol and here we are."l

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Assaff Zamir, Israeli passenger:
"You know, I think it’s a complicated situation for everyone. Although I think, in overall, the population in Israel are resilient and I think we are strong. Nevertheless, I think that most of us have kids at home, which makes things much more complicated for us. And this is why you see so many people looking any way to go back home. I think that this is part of who we are. We are not running away."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of stranded Israelis were queuing outside the departures area of Cyprus’ main port of Limassol on Saturday waiting to board a cruise ship that would take them home.

Israeli Michelle Roazen said she spent all day trying to find a way to get back to her children in Israel.

"Once I actually secured the place on the cruise, it was quite a relief," she said.

The Israeli cruise ship, Crown Iris, arrived in Limassol earlier on Saturday carrying an estimated 1,500 evacuees, mostly young people from all over the world, who were in Israel as part of a 10-day tour of the country to reconnect with their Jewish identity.

It was the cruise ship’s second trip to Cyprus after bringing evacuees and taking back Israelis two days earlier.

Cyprus, some 270 kilometers (167 miles) away from Israel, is the closest European country.

It has been a key transit hub for Israeli’s wishing to return, as well as third-country evacuees seeking to be repatriated.
