"The advantage of Paris compared to other major European cities and even those around the world, is that we have a lot of green spaces. And we benefit from these green spaces, and a lot of shade, due to the buildings and even the coolness of Parisian stone. This really adds beneficial aspects to our urban environment. Here, we are in a square, so it’s very intense. But as soon as you enter the city, in the streets of the Marais or even in the areas nearby, like République or Châtelet, there is a coolness between the buildings. And in the streets that is much more significant and feels refreshing compared to big squares like this where it’s very intense."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Tommy Banker:
"Oh yeah. Shade, I might need to buy one of those little fans to cool off, but shade and as much shade as we could possibly find really. But other than that, I’m exposed to the sun just because we want to explore and walk around, and enjoy the beautiful sights of Paris. So yeah, just trying to stay cool, but it’s worth it."

STORYLINE:
British and French authorities have issued health warnings related to hot weather this weekend, as northern Europe bakes under an early summer heat wave.

Temperatures are forecast to peak at 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of eastern England on Saturday following a week of unusually warm weather, according to the Met Office, Britain’s national weather agency.

That’s about 12 degrees Celsius (22 degrees Fahrenheit) higher than normal for this time of year.

It’s expected to be even hotter in France, where forecasters said temperatures are likely to reach 38 C (100 F) in western and southern parts of the country.

Parisian Nino Chevillon said the architecture of the city is helping him stay cool.

"We have a lot of green spaces. And we benefit from these green spaces, and a lot of shade, due to the buildings and even the coolness of Parisian stone," he said.

Temperatures in Paris on Saturday afternoon reached 34 C.
