“The use of military force, which is offensive in nature, must be approved by the House and the Senate. That’s according to the Constitution. It’s not optional, Donald. It’s not.”

4.SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Minority Leader:
“We haven’t gotten an initial briefing from the White House. All we received from the white house was a so-called courtesy with no explanation as to the rationale for the decision that was taken that could have serious consequences for the American people. I asked for a Gang of Eight briefing. It has yet to occur. And it’s not clear to me what the administration is hiding from the Congress and from the American people. If they have a case to make, come up to Capitol Hill and make it.”

5.SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Minority Leader:
“And what’s in front of us right now is the Trump administration has a responsibility to come to Congress, justify its actions, for which we’ve seen no evidence to justify its offensive strike in Iran. And we also don’t even know how effective the strike has been. There’s zero evidence that I’ve seen. The nuclear program was completely and totally obliterated as Donald Trump has claimed. No evidence that has been presented to Congress to suggest that that has occurred. Let’s see what happens at the classified briefing tomorrow.”

6.SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Minority Leader:
“As it relates to just the climate of political violence that exists and that’s something that we need to decisively deal with here on Capitol Hill. This should not be a Democratic or Republican issue. Every single member of the House and the Senate should be able to do their job free of the threat of political violence to themselves and to their families. And that’s going to require the House taking decisive steps in terms of increasing the resources available to keep members of Congress safe so we can actually effectively represent the American people, regardless of party affiliation or political ideology.”

7.SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Minority Leader:
“In terms of the (New York City) mayor’s race, it’s going to be close, it appears. I’ve said this is in the hands of the people of New York City and we’ll see what the outcome is but I think at this moment in time no one can credibly predict who the winner will until all votes have been cast.
(Reporter: Endorsements?)
I’m going to pass on that one. Thank you all.”

STORYLINE:
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries says they have seen "no evidence" to justify the US strikes on Iran over the weekend.
"The Trump administration has a responsibility to come to Congress, justify its actions, for which we’ve seen no evidence to justify its offensive strike in Iran," Jeffries said.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said he had a classified briefing Monday morning about Iran. He spoke to reporters soon after Iran had launched a missile attack on a U.S. military bases in Qatar and Iraq.
Jeffries said there would be a classified briefing for House members Tuesday afternoon.
Trump’s bombardment of three sites in Iran quickly sparked debate in Congress over his authority to launch the strikes, with Republicans praising Trump for decisive action even as many Democrats warned he should have sought congressional approval.
