"China is closely following the development of the situation in the Middle East. We do not want to see the spiral of escalations and hope that a ceasefire can be realized as soon as possible. Facts have proven that military means cannot bring about peace and that dialogue and negotiation is the right way to solve problems. China calls on the parties concerned to return to the right track of political settlement at an early date. China is ready to work with the international community to maintain peace and stability in the Middle East."

STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday restated that it is “closely following” the Middle East tensions and called for a ceasefire to be implemented “as soon as possible.”

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks at a daily news briefing in Beijing when asked about U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on social media that Israel and Iran have agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire.”

“China calls on the parties concerned to return to the right track of political settlement at an early date,” Guo added.

Earlier Tuesday, Israel warned its public to take shelter after detecting missile launches from Iran.

The launches came after 4 a.m. local time in Tehran, the time Iran’s Foreign Minister said Iran would stop its attacks if Israel ended their airstrikes.

It is unclear yet how the latest developments will impact possible ceasefire agreements.
