"So this ivory is mined. It mainly comes from Siberia where it’s preserved in the permafrost and it’s shipped out to China, which is the main markets and it is carved into ornaments of various sizes and motifs and that trade has been around for a long time. So ivory carving is not anything new, but the elephant ivory is the ivory, its texture and its colour has always been prized by carvers."

"China cracked down on the elephant ivory trade recently, very effectively smashing the smuggling networks and you can’t buy ivory openly here, you will be punished for that. Enforcement is very strict now. But mammoth ivory, because it comes from an extinct animal, it’s legal. It’s completely legal material for carvings. It’s not particularly high quality it’s ivory is actually relatively low quality, but it’s similar. So it’s not a replacement for elephant ivory.

"The concern, and this concern has been around for a while is that with elephants being exterminated for their ivory, we’re losing elephants I think in the last century, we lost 90% of the world’s elephants. Mammoth ivory can be used as a laundering method for elephant ivory. So to give you an example, a shipment comes in of absolutely legal mammoth ivory labelled as such and the customs let it through. But within that, you can mix elephant ivory, which they don’t look that similar, but you can make them look similar. And especially if you’re not an expert who’s, you know, obviously, law enforcement are not trained in that to distinguish different types of ivory. So there’s been concerns that smugglers can use this mixed shipments, illegal products mixed in, covering and you know masking an illegal product that looks similar. So that’s been such a big concern than that might happen and also if you have, for example, a carving and it’s ivory and it therefore illegal elephant ivory you can say oh look this is actually mammoth and therefore it’s completely legal and then it’s you have to be proven guilty. So and that loophole has been a matter of concern for conservationists."
