"People are scared to report crimes when they need help. I think at the bare minimum, local law enforcement, we rely on people trusting us, and they can call 911 for help. And we have seen a decrease in calls for service around immigrant communities because they’re terrified. And it’s not even just if their legal status is in question, it’s students with visas, it’s people with green cards. I mean, and it’s irresponsible rhetoric coming down from the national level that’s incited fear in our communities."

STORYLINE:
Faith leaders and immigration activists held a rally Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale outside the National Association of Sheriff’s Annual Conference.
The activists had a letter written by the progressive Christian advocacy group Faithful America, which they unsuccessfully attempted to pass to the conference organizers.
They carried signs denouncing voluntary cooperation agreements, known as 287g agreements, between local law enforcement agencies around the country and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The activists were joined by Alyshia Dyer, a sheriff from Washtenaw County in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
"We have seen a decrease in calls for service around immigrant communities because they’re terrified. And it’s not even just if their legal status is in question," she said.
