STORYLINE:
U.S. President Donald Trump arrived at Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands on Tuesday evening enroute to the NATO Summit in The Hague.
Landing just after 7 p.m. local time, Trump emerged from Air Force One holding a white ‘USA’ cap which he wore as he disembarked.
As Trump headed to summit, he earlier injected some uncertainty over whether the U.S. would abide by the mutual defense guarantees outlined in the NATO treaty — comments that could revive long-standing concern from European allies about his commitment to the military alliance.
Trump wants every country to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. But Spain says it won’t get there, and Slovakia says it reserves the right to decide for itself.
The President has just a few appearances scheduled for the rest of the evening, including a courtesy call at The Hague with Dutch King Willem-Alexander and his wife, as well as a dinner for leaders of NATO’s 32 member countries.
