STORYLINE:
A South Korean court’s ban on K-pop group NewJeans performing without their agency’s approval became final Wednesday, after the group failed to appeal by the deadline, according to Yonhap News Agency.
The Seoul High Court on June 17 upheld a lower court’s injunction that prevents the five members from signing advertising contracts or pursuing separate music activities without consent from their management company ADOR, Yonhap reported.
Under South Korean law, appeals to the Supreme Court must be filed within one week of an appellate court ruling.
The court imposed financial penalties of 1 billion won ($750,000) per violation for any member who defies the order, according to Yonhap.
ADOR, a subsidiary of HYBE that also manages BTS, sought the injunction after arguing that NewJeans violated earlier court orders by performing under the name "NJZ" at a Hong Kong concert in March and debuting new music during the show.
The legal battle began in November when the group’s members — Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein — announced they were terminating their contract with ADOR, citing mistreatment and mismanagement. The agency maintains the contract remains valid and cannot be unilaterally terminated.
NewJeans has emerged as one of K-pop’s most successful acts, becoming the first female K-pop group to win "Group of the Year" at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards. They also claimed "Top Global K-Pop Artist" at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards and "Artist of the Year" honors at both the MAMA Awards and Melon Music Awards that year.
