STORYLINE:
As summer temperatures soar across the Balkans at near 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), the Bear Sanctuary in Kosovo’s capital Pristina has been preparing frozen treats made from fruits and vegetables.
The icy snacks are made from apples, watermelons, carrots, and berries, and are a refreshing and nutritious way to help the bears cope with the intense heat.
“What we try to do for our bears so we keep them as refreshed as possible, we freeze fruits daily, and also we refresh and we change water very often in their swimming pool so at least they have some options to refresh," said Taulant Hoxha, a bear sanctuary official.
The sanctuary, managed by the international animal welfare organization Four Paws, is home to over 18 rescued brown bears.
With climate change making summers increasingly harsh, initiatives like these have become essential for animal welfare.
Warnings were also issued for forest fires, which are a common problem over the summer months all over the Balkans.
