“The relevant personnel from NATO have been hyping up regional tensions and smearing China’s normal military development. Their aim is nothing more than to make an excuse to justify NATO’s sharp increase in military spending, reckless expansion of its powers, and its strategic push eastward into the Asia-Pacific.”

STORYLINE:
China on Thursday hit back at NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte after he warned of Beijing’s growing military strength and its alleged support for Russia in the Ukraine war.

Speaking ahead of the NATO summit in the Netherlands, Rutte underscored the importance of the alliance’s relationship with Asia Pacific partners, including Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand, who he said are very worried about China’s massive military buildup.

He also noted that China’s large-scale oil purchase from Russia has helped Moscow circumvent Western sanctions.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun rejected the claims, accusing Rutte of “hyping up regional tensions and smearing China’s normal military development.”

“Their aim is nothing more than to make an excuse to justify NATO’s sharp increase in military spending, reckless expansion of its powers, and its strategic push eastward into the Asia-Pacific,” he said.

Guo reiterated China’s stance on the Ukraine conflict, denying any military support for Russia and stressing that Beijing strictly controls the export of dual-use items.

“NATO’s disinformation cannot blind the world. If NATO truly cares about the security of Europe and the world, it should stop fanning the flames and inciting confrontation,” he said.

Calling NATO’s outreach into the Asia-Pacific a violation of its own geographic mandate, Guo urged the alliance to “abandon outdated Cold War thinking, bloc confrontation, and zero-sum games” and “correct its wrongful perceptions about China.”

Beijing sees NATO as a relic of the Cold War, whose eastward expansion and growing presence in the Indo-Pacific threaten global stability and risk fueling geopolitical tensions in the region.
