"I was introduced to the sea much later (in life.) For example, I learned to swim when I was 14 or 15. I loved being on the sea. Working on the sea was also very enjoyable for me. If I was on a vessel on the water, I felt like I would be in constant contact (with the water,) I would be able to hear the sound of the sea, the foam of the sea."

"When I worked as a sailor, they (boat captains) would frequently give me the helm. On long trips I’d train, I’d train how to dock. And I had enthusiasm. The captains saw this and taught me a few things. I took the (captain’s license) course after that."

"Sometimes sports fans take the taxi after games. I have a lot of fun with them. Sometimes I even turn music on for them. Whatever team they root for, I put my own team aside. We have incredible fun. There are songs, folk music, people jumping up and down."

"We work in a place that people think of as a ‘view.’ This is a great bonus. We work for 12 hours, but every break we have, we get our coffee and are already in the middle of such a landscape. It’s blissful."

STORYLINE:
Boat captain Buse Ozge Kekec spends her days sailing on Istanbul’s iconic Golden Horn and Bosporus which surround the Turkish city’s historic peninsula.
Growing up in the Turkish coastal city of Izmir, she would watch seafarers go to work every day on the blue waters of the Aegean Sea.
She was so captivated by life on the water that she changed course and signed up for sailing school.
Kekec moved to Istanbul in 2019 to kickstart her career in boating.
"When I worked as a sailor, they (boat captains) would frequently give me the helm. On long trips I’d train, I’d train how to dock. And I had enthusiasm,” said the 30-year-old.
Encouraged by the support she received from her skippers, Kekec went on to obtain her captain’s license and soon started piloting vessels herself.
In 2023, she secured a spot in Istanbul’s seafaring history when she became the first female captain to work for Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s City Lines which has been operating for nearly 174 years.
She feels lucky that her work immerses her in the scenic waters of Istanbul everyday.
"We work for 12 hours, but every break we have, we get our coffee and are already in the middle of such a landscape. It’s blissful,” she said.
