“What you’re looking at here is a carbon capture site where we take carbon dioxide, CO2, and inject it permanently in the ground and sequester it so that it’s no longer in the atmosphere and that’s helping decarbonize the entire environment.”

“CO2, once you put it underground, you don’t have any more control over it. You can’t handle it, you can’t direct it where to go. All you can do is monitor it. And CO2 may stay active in terms of moving around underground, some cases for decades, some… cases depending on the geology for centuries. Who’s going to monitor that for decades or centuries? What happens if 50 years on a leak develops?”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Lauren Read , Senior Vice President, BVK:
“Our planet is heating up, global warming is happening, and we have very aggressive goals as a country and as a society to reduce the amount of emissions that we are contributing towards global warming."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Lauren Read , Senior Vice President, BVK:
"It’s very important that we figure out real solutions to do these things in ways that sustain industries that are important to our economies. And so that’s where CCOS gets really exciting is it’s really a method to sustain both energy and other industries in the United States here domestically.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Grant Hauber, Energy analyst, IEEFA:
“We are looking at facilities that might do a million tons of CO2 storage a year, some five million, and even some clusters that are being proposed in the UK and Europe are looking at 10 to 15 million tons per year, which sounds like a lot of storage potential. And they’re spending billions of dollars on those. But last year, we emitted 38 billion tons of CO2 worldwide. You know, we are talking fractions of a percent, even if you aggregate all of the projects proposed, and let’s just say that all of them go forward, we’re still looking at fractions of a percent of the total emissions in the world.”

STORYLINE:
Power plants and industrial facilities that emit carbon dioxide, the primary driver of global warming, are hopeful that Congress will keep tax credits for capturing the gas and storing it deep underground.
The process, called carbon capture and sequestration, is seen by many as an important way to reduce pollution during a transition to renewable energy.
But it faces criticism from some conservatives, who say it is expensive and unnecessary, and from environmentalists, who say it has consistently failed to capture as much pollution as industry says it will and is simply a way for industry to prolong fossil fuel use.
Here’s a closer look:
How does the process work?
How much carbon dioxide is captured?
Future of U.S. tax credits is unclear
