1. Smoke rising into sky in northern Gaza
STORYLINE:
A large plume of smoke was seen rising over the Gaza Strip on Thursday as Israel continues with its offensive.
With a fragile ceasefire holding between Israel and Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump said there has been “great progress” in Gaza ceasefire talks, without elaborating.
Gaza health authorities had announced on Tuesday that the number of Palestinians killed in the war has risen above 56,000.
Experts say Israel’s blockade and military campaign have driven the population to the brink of famine.
The war began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251.
Most of the hostages have since been released in ceasefire agreements or other deals. Israel has rescued eight and recovered dozens of bodies.
