“We departed for Ada (colloquial name of the lake) from our home early. We substituted the sea with lake water this year and we find it very nice here. We’re getting old, I’m 75, my husband is 76, and we’re having a good time.”

STORYLINE:
Locals in Belgrade flocked to Ada Ciganlija as the Western Balkans experience a heat wave, with temperatures rising to 39 degrees Centigrade (102 Fahrenheit) on Thursday.
The Meteorological Society of Serbia issued a warning for extreme weather and high temperatures, cautioning people to stay at home and engage in low energy activities when possible.
The artificial lake, Ada Ciganlija, is lined kilometers of pebble beaches and dotted with coffee shops, bars and restaurants.
Ada is very popular with senior citizens in extremely hot and humid summer days.
Most chose to sit in the shade and sporadically go out for a swim.
“We departed for Ada from our home early. We substituted the sea with lake water this year and we find it very nice here. We’re getting old, I’m 75, my husband is 76, and we’re having a good time,” resident Mirjana Popovic said.
Another senior citizen, Bogoljub Jankovic, doesn’t enjoy the summer heat.
“This heat is not very soothing, it’s a struggle. We shower, we stay in the deep shade, we have no other activities, perhaps a walk in the morning or in the evening,” Jankovic said.
