3. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"My wish is that we reach an agreement quickly, and I can say that there is a real willingness among Europeans and a genuine desire to conclude. But this goodwill should not be seen as weakness. We want to conclude quickly because it is in our collective interest, and it is good for the stability of international trade and for our companies, but we do not want to conclude quickly at any cost. If, in the end, the Americans choose to keep 10% tariffs on our economy, there will inevitably be a reciprocal tariff on goods and products sold by Americans on the European market. And the tax imposed on our industries will result in an equivalent tax being imposed on their industries. Because otherwise, we would be naïve or weak, or both at the same time. And we are neither."

5. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"On Gaza, I got the feeling that President Trump was very determined, very willing, and aware of the importance of a ceasefire. And I think that his commitment is essential on this issue, and I know his team is engaged in ongoing discussions. And I think that it is absolutely essential given the tragedy unfolding there. But during the discussion I had, I saw a president who was truly aware of this and wanted to achieve a result. And my aim is to do so as quickly as possible."

7. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"For me, the worst scenario would be one where we would let Iran respond by withdrawing from the Non-Proliferation Treaty, following these truly effective strikes, and the American strikes were genuinely effective on Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. That would, in the end, lead to a drift and a collective weakening. So, what I want to do in the coming days is to engage our diplomacy and our actions to preserve the Non-Proliferation Treaty and to bring together all five permanent members of the Security Council. I started with President Trump today, and I will continue with each of them."

STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron said that he hopes that a trade deal between the U.S and the European Union can still be reached in order to avoid harming companies, economies and industries.
"We want to conclude quickly because it is in our collective interest, and it is good for the stability of international trade and for our companies," said Macron at a news briefing in Brussels overnight into Friday.
"But we do not want to conclude quickly at any cost," he added.
US President Donald Trump has rejected an EU offer of zero tariffs on both sides industrial goods and cars, while the EU has rejected changes in the regulation of digital companies and in its national value-added taxes, which economists say are trade neutral because they are levied on imports and domestic goods alike.
The trade issue is crucial for the EU’s trade dependent economy; the commission’s forecast for modest growth of 0.9% in GDP this year was based on an assumption the EU could negotiate its tariff down to Trump’s 10% baseline minimum for almost all trade partners.
Macron also said that he had a phone call on Thursday with Trump, during which they discussed the situation in Gaza.
