5. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Martina Vergnano, Venice resident and demonstrator:
"Today is the big day, and we’ve already made them change their plans once. Today’s (wedding) location has been moved from Misericordia to North Arsenale, and we’re here to continue ruining the plans for this day, because today there can be no room for tabloid stories about orange blossoms and flowing dresses. The issue here is that one of the richest men in the world is getting married, someone who profits and makes money from war, someone who, together with others, plays with the lives of millions of people as if it were a game of Monopoly, someone who makes money off exploitation. And while people are dying in Palestine and while the conditions in this very city are precarious, someone comes along and thinks they can rent it out and use it as a spotless venue for a big event. Instead, even today, he (Bezos) found a good reaction, so we continue to ruin his party."
6. Demonstrators holding banners before starting march
7. Mid of banner reading (English), "Get out of our lagoon"
8. Mid of flag reading (English) "No space for Bezos, no war"
9. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Flavio Cogo, Venetian activist:
"We want a free city that is finally dedicated to its citizens, and we consider the money given to local entities to be a misery: one million euro each just to clear his (Bezos) conscience towards institutions that have done nothing for the citizens and Venice in recent years."
10. Various of demonstrators standing before starting their march
11. Mid of banner reading (Italian) "Bezos out of the lagoon"

13. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Giacomo Scarpa, Venice resident and demonstrator:
"As a Venetian, I want to defend my city from this mass tourism that continues to overwhelm it every day, and Bezos is the symbol of that. So I took this opportunity (to protest)."
14. Various of demonstrators holding a banner from the Rialto Bridge reading (English) "No Space for Bezos", while lighting smoke bombs and chanting (Italian), "Bezos out of the lagoon"
STORYLINE:
A few hundred protesters marched through Venice central streets on Saturday to say “No” to Jeff Bezos, his bride and their much-anticipated wedding extravaganza, which reached its third and final day amid celebrity-crowded parties and citizens’ outcry.

On Friday, the world’s fourth-richest man and his bride Lauren Sanchez Bezos tied the knot during a private ceremony with around 200 celebrity guests on the secluded island of San Giorgio.

The wedding, however, divided Venice, with some activists protesting it as an exploitation of the city by the billionaire Bezos, while ordinary residents suffer from over-tourism, high housing costs and the constant threat of climate-induced flooding.

As the two newlyweds prepared for the final party on Saturday evening, hundreds of venetians and protesters coming from across Italy filled Venice tiny streets with colourful banners reading “Kisses Yes, Bezos No” and “No Bezos, no War.”

The demonstration was openly in contrast with the wedding costly bonanza, considered by critics as an affront to the lagoon city’s fragile environment and its citizens, overwhelmed by raging over-tourism.
