Direct diplomacy between the United States and Russia. Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin spoke for almost an hour on the phone today – with no obvious breakthrough in ending the war in Ukraine.
According to the Kremlin, President Putin expressed his willingness to continue the negotiation process, but was insistent that Russia would NOT deviate from its stated goals in its invasion of Ukraine. This was the sixth conversation between the two presidents this year, with next to no results to show for them.
Today’s phone call followed Washington’s announcement that it’s withholding some weapons deliveries to Ukraine to"put America’s interests first".
The cutbacks are expected to affect air-defense missiles and precision artillery rounds, which the US says it’s running short of. Ukraine is warning the move will embolden Russia to prolong the war, while the Kremlin says it will help end it.
Speaking in Denmark ahead of a meeting with European allies – President Zelenskyy said he hopes to speak with President Trump tomorrow about those weapons transfers. But Ukraine is behind US peace efforts.
