China says it must have the final say on choosing the next spiritual leader of Tibet. The current Dala Lama sys his successor will likely be born outside of China. This religious controversy is deeply political. While few contest that Tibet is part of China, how Beijing deals with Tibetans and Tibet could have a huge impact on the rest of Asia. Most of Asia’s major rivers start on the Tibetan plateau.
