It is just because of China’s firm stance and active efforts, the international supervision of the discharge has been effectively strengthened. “Chinese diplomats always abide by the laws and regulations of the host countries. No matter what tactics the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities employ to seek independence by relying on foreign forces, and no matter how they try to sow discord between China and countries with which it has diplomatic relations, their malicious intent cannot be concealed and will never succeed.”

STORYLINE:
China on Monday said it still opposed Japan’s discharge of treated wastewater from the tsunami-destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant, even as it conditionally reopened its market to Japanese seafood.

Chinese customs issued a notice announcing the conditional resumption of imports of Japanese aquatic products on Sunday based on scientific evidence, including monitoring data and sample analysis, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters at a daily news briefing.

China would “continue to strengthen regulatory measures to ensure food safety for the public. If any risks are identified, necessary import restrictions will be promptly imposed in accordance with the law,” she added.

The ban, imposed in August 2023, was a major blow to Japan’s scallop and sea cucumber exporters.

China was the biggest overseas market for Japanese seafood.

The decision to lift the ban coincides with efforts by China and Japan to improve ties as both face economic uncertainty because of the American tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

However, a ban remains in place for seafood from 10 of Japan’s 47 prefectures, including Fukushima and others nearby.

Separately, Mao insisted that Chinese diplomats have been acting in line with “laws and regulations of the host countries” following reports that Chinese diplomats and agents tailed Taiwanese Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim’s car during her visit to the Czech Republic last year.
