STORYLINE:
Russia said on Monday a color revolution in Serbia is possible after thousands of people set up street blockades on Sunday, but expressed confidence in the government restoring order.
"Despite the fact that Serbia is undoubtedly under unprecedented pressure, and we cannot rule out the use of well-known technologies aimed at provoking color revolutions, we have no doubt that the current Serbian leadership will be able to restore law and order in the republic in the very near future," said Russian Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov during a conference call with reporters.
Protesters on Sunday demanded that authorities release dozens of university students and other protesters who were jailed for attacking the police or for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government at the rally Saturday in Belgrade.
Tens of thousands of people attended the rally held after nearly eight months of persistent dissent that has rattled populist President Aleksandar Vucic.
Peskov also said imposing new sanctions on Russia won’t contribute to the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine after US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham claimed U.S. President Donald Trump backed his bill introducing more sanctions on Russia.
He said the work of law enforcement agencies should not be a reason for such a reaction.
