1. SOUNDBITE (English) Embeth Davidtz, writer/director/actor:
"And so I didn’t know she’d be able to pull it off. I took a gamble, I did, I directed her in a very unconventional way. I did not give her the screenplay. I did give her scenes to learn. I almost moved her from A to B off camera and had two cameras following her all the time because she didn’t really know what she was doing, but that was essential because then she stayed free. She played. I made it play for her. I gave her things to keep busy with. I grabbed moments when she had the hiccups or when she was looking out the window. She’s such a bright, open, curious creature that I… And the camera just loves her face, that I could put the camera on her, add voiceover later, and have a whole sequence of events just from that, or put her in the bathtub, have her playing, and then call out the lines to her, and she could mimic them. So I just got very lucky. I don’t even know if we did it now, if at almost age 10, if she could do the same thing. I want her to stay unspoiled forever and never learn anything and just stay the open creature that she is."
