STORYLINE:
A heat dome swept across parts of Europe on Tuesday, leading authorities to raise warnings and tourists to find ways to beat the heat.
In Spain, a digital thermometer in the capital Madrid displayed 46 degrees Celsius (114.8 Fahrenheit), with some people using street hydrants to cool off.
Data from European forecasters suggests several countries in southern Europe are set to boil further in the coming days — with new highs expected on Wednesday — before rain brings respite in some areas later in the week.
Telecommunication technician Miguel Angel Sopera said people in Madrid are "just surviving."
"It’s hard to sleep, (I sleep) very poorly, very poorly, almost more like at dawn because at night it’s impossible due to the terrible heat, so much heat," Sopera said.
People in Rome were also struggling to cope with the heat as temperatures rose above 40 degrees Celsius or 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tourists dunked their hands, arms and faces into Rome’s ubiquitous fountains and snacked on gelato as they tried to keep cool.
