STORYLINE:
Turkish police detained three more employees of a satirical magazine early on Tuesday, raising the number of people taken into custody over a cartoon that allegedly depicted the Prophet Muhammad to four.

Dozens of protesters in Istanbul demonstrated against a magazine that published a cartoon that depicted a man named Muhammad and another named Moses exchanging greetings in mid-air as missiles rained down from the sky.

Chanting “May our lives and blood be sacrificed for the messenger of Allah,” protestors gathered under heavy police presence at a mosque near the city’s main square Tuesday.

The cartoon published in LeMan drew a string of condemnation from government officials who stated the cartoon represented the Prophet Muhammad and sparked angry protests.

The magazine has denied that the illustration depicts the Prophet Muhammad.

Authorities launched an investigation into the weekly magazine over accusations of “publicly insulting religious values” and detained the cartoonist, Dogan Pehlivan, from his home.

Overnight, Leman’s editor-in-chief Zafer Aknar, graphic designer Cebrail Okcu and manager Ali Yavuz were also detained, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

Detention warrants were also issued for two editors who are believed to be abroad, the report said.

Late on Monday, demonstrators, reportedly belonging to an Islamic group, hurled rocks at LeMan’s headquarters in central Istanbul and scuffled with police.

Associated Press footage showed some damage inflicted on the building.
