STORYLINE:
The Western Balkans have been experiencing a heat wave over the past few days, with temperatures rising to 39 degrees Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) on Thursday.
The Serbian meteorological society has issued a warning for extreme weather and high temperatures, cautioning people to stay at home and engage in low-energy activities when possible.
In Belgrade, many people headed to the local beach on the Danube river to find respite.
Entire swathes of Europe have been baking in unusually hot summer heat over the past several days, causing closures of schools, public services, and popular tourist attractions, with health warnings urging people to avoid spending time outdoors.
Portugal, Spain and England have had the hottest June on record, and similar temperatures have hit France, Italy, and Belgium.
