STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday pushed back against a warning from Switzerland’s Federal Intelligence Service that the country faces growing espionage threats from nations including China and Russia.
In its annual overview, the agency said intensifying global rivalry between the U.S. and China and Russia has increased intelligence pressure on Switzerland, a militarily neutral country.
"The greatest espionage threats come from Russia and China,” the report said, citing their strong intelligence presence in the country.
“The so-called China espionage threat is completely fabricated,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a daily news briefing when asked about the allegation.
“China is a victim of espionage activities. We have consistently opposed all forms of espionage and urge relevant parties to stop hyping up confrontation, fabricating lies, and deliberately smearing China,” she said.
Separately, Mao reaffirmed China’s support for the establishment of a Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ), following reports that both China and Russia have agreed to sign the treaty protocol, while the U.S. is still reviewing it.
“We have repeatedly stated our willingness to take the lead in signing the treaty’s protocol. China is willing to continue communicating with ASEAN countries on the signing of the protocol,” Mao said.
Meanwhile, Mao reiterated China’s opposition to any agreements that harm the interests of third parties, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that he had reached a trade deal with Vietnam that could impose a 40% tariff on goods transshipped through the country.
