"We have various species of animals, some suffer in the heat, while others are indifferent to the heat. When I walk by the area of the Grevy’s zebras, they are from Kenya and southern Ethiopia, this heat does not make any difference for them. Also for brown bears, they can dive in their pool, they are active as usual."

8. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Yitzhak Yadid, Rome zoo general curator:
"It is clear that during these hot days we try to give them something refreshing, just as we have an icicle to cool down, five minute of pleasure, we do the same here. We give icicles to the bears. It’s just a bucket with fish, vegetables and fruit."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Yitzhak Yadid, Rome zoo general curator:
"We are using an enrichment program during summertime. We are freezing different food items, depending on the species. We just put water with meat or with fruit or whatever, we put it in the freezer for 24 hours and then you have some icicles for them which you give them in different places. And this is a very simple way to give them five minutes… just to cool down a little bit, something very refreshing."

STORYLINE:
Rome zoo served up frozen treats to its animals on Wednesday with the Italian capital caught in the severe heat wave affecting much of Europe.
Brown bears, tigers and lemurs were among the mammals to receive the icicles packed with meat, fruit or vegetables.
The zoo’s general curator Yitzhak Yadid said the treats also serve as a source of enrichment to the animals as they figure out how to break through the ice.
Yadid also explained the attraction was constantly monitoring its residents as some were much more used to dealing with the heat than others.
Italy’s Health Ministry has said 17 of the country’s 27 major cities were experiencing a heat wave.
The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts said that it was closely monitoring the abnormally hot temperatures.
Weather experts link the heat wave to climate change.
