2. SOUNDBITE (English): Eric Croft, chair of the Alaska Democratic Party:
"Alaska is a small state. We served together, you know, my wife, when sees Lisa, it’s ‘Hi Lisa, Hi Joanna.’ So that’s a wonderful thing about Alaska, but you can have a friend and be very disappointed in them and a good friend says to a friend, ‘That wasn’t your best self. You should not have done that.’ I think that’s what Alaskans need to do in this case, say, ‘We love you, but this was a very bad vote.’"

4. SOUNDBITE (English): Alan Smith, Anchorage resident:
"Uh well, I’m really disappointed. I feel like she sold out. I suppose she was probably worried about getting on the wrong side of Trump and his team. I’m really worried about the cuts in general, especially the Medicaid, and I don’t think that the concessions she got are worth it at all."

6. SOUNDBITE (English): Alan Smith, Anchorage resident:
"I feel like I’m in a very privileged position myself because I mean, I’ve worked for a long time and saved money and I don’t need a lot of those benefits but I would still rather pay more taxes to improve the welfare of non-Alaskans as well. I don’t think that what we got for Alaska really counts for a whole lot."

8. SOUNDBITE (English): Alan Smith, Anchorage resident:
"I’m not a registered Republican. I’m not registered with any party, but I’ve consistently voted for her because I’ve agreed with, I mean a lot of her stances and her bravery in the past and I don’t feel like she was brave right now."

10. SOUNDBITE (English): Lisa Kozler, Anchorage resident:
"It’s hard for me to have full faith in the fact that she’s not just appeasing both sides by some of her stances and then wavering at the end. I think this is not the first time that we’ve seen that from her, but I do really appreciate that she is one of the few that actually will stand up and say when she believes he’s wrong."

STORYLINE:
Not all Alaskans are in favor of Alaska-specific provisions in President Donald Trump’s sweeping bill of tax and spending cuts.
When it became clear Alaska Republican U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski could be the final vote needed for passage, she leveraged the pressure campaign on her from fellow Republicans special carve outs for Alaska, including for Medicaid and food assistance programs.
But it remained unclear to some policy experts what the rollout would look like and the extent to which they might head off disruptions in coverage and benefits.
Alaska state government has struggled to hire and retain workers, and there are worries about the strain additional paperwork or regulations might put on the system.
Eric Croft is an Anchorage lawyer, head of the Alaska Democratic Party and a former colleague of Murkowski’s when both served in the Alaska Legislature.
He said the bill is bad for Alaskans and all Americans.
He said the benefit of a small population state like Alaska is that most people feel like they know Murkowski and can call her by her first name.
“I think that’s what Alaskans need to do in this case, say ‘We love you, but this was a very bad vote,’” he said.
