"It is clear that tariff negotiations (with the US) are not easy. It is unclear whether we can conclude the negotiations by July 8. We are doing our best. We have to reach an agreement that is mutually beneficial but it is still unclear what both sides want. I want to say that we are trying."

"Although it is important to focus on specific human rights issues in North Korea, I think providing humanitarian assistance to improve the lives of North Korean people, might also contribute to improving human rights in North Korea."

STORYLINE:
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said it remained unclear whether South Korea and the US could conclude their tariff negotiations by the July 8 deadline set by President Donald Trump.
“We are doing our best. We have to reach an agreement that is mutually beneficial but it is still unclear what both sides want,” Lee told the media at a press conference on Thursday.
Lee said both sides were still trying to clearly define what they want and identify common ground.
Separately, the South Korean President said they will attempt to resume communication between the South and North Korea.
“We will open a path for peace and coexistence through dialogue and cooperation”.
Lee also hinted South Korea was willing to provide a humanitarian assistance to North Korea.
"Although it is important to focus on specific human rights issues in North Korea, I think providing humanitarian assistance to improve the lives of North Korean people, might also contribute to improving human rights in North Korea," said Lee.
