“We haven’t been formally notified by the Iranian authorities of the charges against our two compatriots. If the charges evoked were confirmed, we would consider them totally unjustified and unfounded. The President of the Republic (French President Emmanuel Macron) with his Iranian counterpart, myself with the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs – I said it very strongly – we demand the immediate, unconditional release of Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris. We will continue to get mobilized as long as necessary, by their side, by their families, who are going through an extremely difficult and painful ordeal.”

STORYLINE:
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot denounced on Thursday as “unjustified and unfounded” spying charges reportedly being held against two French nationals imprisoned in Iran for over three years and urged for their immediate release.
Cécile Kohler, 40 and her partner Jacques Paris, 72, were arrested in May 2022 and were until last month detained at Tehran’s Evin prison, known for holding dual nationals and Westerners often used by Iran as bargaining chips in negotiations with the West.
A French diplomat was able to meet them earlier this week as families were demanding proof that they were alive, following recent Israeli strikes on the prison.
The visit by the French diplomat took place at a prison south of Tehran but it is unknown where they are being detained, Kohler’s family said.
Like some other prisoners, Kohler and Paris have been moved from the Evin prison following the Israeli strikes.
Barrot said Thursday “we haven’t been formally notified by the Iranian authorities of the charges against our two compatriots.”
If they were confirmed, “we would consider them are totally unjustified and unfounded,” Barrot said.
France demands “the immediate, unconditional release of Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris," he added.
