"Ice cubes, or frozen food, or quick access to water. Water housing like we have here, fog (mist) that can cool down a little bit and it’s like you eating an ice cream – it will be nice for you for like 20 minutes and we provide it to them. But the most important thing we have to provide to them is a good environment matching with their biological needs."

"We have various species of animals, some suffer in the heat, while others are indifferent to the heat. When I walk by the area of the Grevy’s zebras, they are from Kenya and southern Ethiopia, this heat does not make any difference for them. Also for brown bears, they can dive in their pool, they are active as usual."

STORYLINE:
Rome and Paris zoos served up frozen treats to its animals on Wednesday after the European capitals were caught in a severe heat wave.

Brown bears, lions and lemurs were among the mammals to receive the icicles packed with meat, fruit or vegetables.

Rome Zoo’s general curator Yitzhak Yadid explained the attraction was constantly monitoring its residents as some were much more used to dealing with the heat than others.

"The Grevy’s zebras, they are from Kenya and southern Ethiopia, this heat does not make any difference for them" he said.

Italy’s Health Ministry has said 17 of the country’s 27 major cities were experiencing a heat wave.

With temperatures rising beyond 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) in the French capital for the third day in a row, zookeepers provided the animals with frozen food in an effort to beat the heat and provide some immediate comfort.

"It’s like you eating an ice cream – it will be nice for you for like 20 minutes and we provide it to them. But the most important thing we have to provide to them is a good environment matching with their biological needs," said Alexis Lecu, Paris Zoo’s chief vet.

The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts said that it was closely monitoring the abnormally hot temperatures.

Weather experts link the heat wave to climate change.
