1. SOUNDBITE (English) Jordan Donica and Denée Benton, actors: Benton – on how McDonald’s character plays her mother and empowers her this season:
Benton: "I think that it becomes this incredible portrayal of like repair and rupture in a Black family structure that has been up against so many dynamics. And I think it’s really beautiful. And she kind of makes Peggy walk into the ball with her head high, even through the incredibly piercing gaze of Phylicia Rashad. If you ever get to hold her gaze, you will feel it in your spine. You know?
Donica: "In real life. She sees you. She sees you."
Benton: "It’s like an X-ray vision. And getting to withstand that as Peggy, some of my reactions on set or that I feel like are caught on screen are really me reacting to what that gaze felt like."
Donica: "Yeah, yeah, it’s she sees the truth of who you are as a human."
Benton: "Yeah, it’s a masterclass. Working with both of them has made me a better actor. Just saying lines back and forth because they’re such a truth that they, neither of them can fake it."
