On July 7, Polish authorities began conducting random checks at 52 points along the country’s border with Germany, a move widely seen as running counter to the spirit of the EU’s visa-free Schengen zone. The new checks follow tighter border controls introduced by the German government under Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
DW’s Matthew Moore spoke with Knut Abraham, the Coordinator for German-Polish Intersocietal and Cross-Border Cooperation, about the newly implemented checks, the future of the Schengen area, and the EU’s ongoing migration dilemma.
