STORYLINE:
Runners strapped on towering high heels to compete in Madrid’s annual High Heel Race, a vibrant and much-anticipated event held as part of the city’s LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations in the Spanish capital.
Competitors raced through the Chueca district, cheered on by crowds of locals and tourists who packed the sidewalks to catch the spectacle.
Large numbers of locals and visitors gathered to watch participants in gravity-defying high heels.
The race, now in its 26th year, has become a tradition that blends athleticism with bold self-expression.
The winner takes home €350 (about $356).
This year’s champion was 25-year-old Raúl Rodríguez.
“This year I said I would win. I came with a strategy. I knew I would win—and I did it. I’m very happy,” he said.
Madrid’s Pride Week will culminate Saturday with a massive parade featuring floats, music, and tens of thousands of participants celebrating diversity and inclusion.
