“I looked out the window and I saw the black smoke. My daughter woke up and we said let’s walk the dog and check what happened. I got down, but as soon as I crossed the bridge leading here form that building we heard the second explosion, but we were also hit by a ball of fire, I thought that a car near us exploded, metal fragments were flying in the air, I got slightly injured on a leg, we felt the fire on the skin, the arm of my daughter is still red, it was horrible.”

8. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Elisabetta Accardo, Rome police spokeswoman:
“We have 16 injured people among civilians, two of them are in a severe conditions and are hospitalised at the Casilino hospital, nine people among the law enforcement corps, policemen, one carbinieri agent and one firefighter. But fortunately they are not in life-threatening conditions.”

“I looked out of the window, I saw the consequences of the first explosion, I saw the flames. The second explosion, now I’ll explain. I was on the balcony, taking a video of the first explosion. There was a lot of smoke, I went back in from the balcony, as soon as I walked in I heard a new explosion, it was like a bomb, the building swung. I can’t explain it, it was really bad.”

STORYLINE:
A gas station exploded Friday in southeastern Rome, injuring at least 20 people, including nine first responders who rushed to the scene, police said.
The blast was heard across the Italian capital Friday morning, sending a huge cloud of dark smoke into the sky visible from several areas of the city.
Elisabetta Accardo, a spokesperson for Rome’s police force, said that eight policemen suffered non-life-threatening burns as a series of explosions followed the initial blast.
The city’s fire department said that one firefighter was also injured.
Police are searching for injured people and no cause was immediately known.
