After a decades-long fight against the Turkish state and more than 40,000 dead, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party – PKK – is laying down arms.
This began with a ceremony today in northern Iraq, with dozens of PKK fighters symbolically burning their weapons. The militants – designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the EU and the US –have said they will now pursue a democratic struggle for Kurdish rights.
