STORYLINE:
Officials in North Carolina say a woman was killed when floodwaters from the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal swept her car from a rural road and dozens of people were forced to flee their homes by floodwaters.
The Chapel Hill Fire Department and neighboring agencies completed more than 50 water rescues, many of them in areas where floodwaters entered or threatened to enter apartments.
Sixty-five-year-old Alesia Ray stood on a second-floor staircase for five hours, clicking a flashlight, until rescuers in a rubber boat got her out.
"It was really scary," she said Monday as she and fiancé Thomas Hux worked to salvage some of their belongings. "I’ve never experience anything like that. I don’t want to go through that again."
