Just last week, President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev were smiling over burgers–
a sure sign that relations between the 2 nations had come a long way.

But a case unfolding along the East Coast sounds like a chapter out of the Cold War.

10 Russian intelligence officers have been arrested allegedly for spying on the U-S.

((Patty DeSimone SOT: I does seem like something that’s a little out of place and time with what’s going on in the world today but guess you can’t be too sure who your neighbor is))

[Notes:Map]
The suspects appeared in federal courts in New York, Boston and Alexandria, Virginia Monday–
one day after FBI agents showed up at each of their homes.

((Tatiana Day/Arlington, Va. SOT: I know some Russians lived across the street but I thought they were students))

One of the raids happened at this apartment complex in suburban Washington.

Another happened in this neighborhood located about 10 miles outside of New York City.

This photo shows FBI agents in Montclair, New Jersey–
2 of the suspects live here apparently with their 2 young daughters.

((Louise Shallcross/Neighbor SOT: They seemed like a nice quiet family. They landscaped. So we’re just all completely shocked ))

Eight of the defendants have been accused of carrying out deep cover assignments in the U-S on behalf of Russia

Their mission, according to court papers, was "to search and develop ties in policymaking circles".

During a long-term FBI investigation…
U-S officials intercepted a message from Russian intelligence headquarters meant for 2 of the suspects.

[Notes:Full screen of message]
The note reminded the agents that their education, money and homes were meant to serve one goal:
gather information and send it back home to Moscow.

Foreign agents are supposed to notify the attorney general before working in the U-S.

[Notes:Prison file]
And if the alleged spies are found guilty of breaking that federal law they could get up to 5 years in prison.

9 of the 10 defendants have also been charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering.

That charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.
