Sixteen-year-old Eli Heacock was alone in his Kentucky bedroom when the photo appeared on his phone. It was an image of him, and he was naked. Send $3,000, the accompanying message said, or the nude picture would go to everyone he knew. So Eli borrowed $50 from his older brother and sent it. It wasn’t enough. The sender wanted more. Within minutes, the threats exploded into a barrage of texts threatening to ruin him and his dreams for the future. In desperation and panic, the boy ended his young life.
The photo, investigators and his inconsolable family later learned, was fake.
This is the newest battlefront in the war against online sextortion.
