"That’s why I am also reaching out to the American administration and asking whether we could possibly reach agreements with America to, for example, support Ukraine with further air defense systems. This is all in close dialogue both between the departments of the federal government and with the American government. I’m doing everything to achieve this goal together."

STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he had three personal meetings and several phone conversations with U.S. President Donald Trump in recent weeks and pressed for the country to continue on with military and civilian help for Ukraine.
“We were able to achieve the first small successes in recent days – U.S. military aid will essentially be continued and not halted,” Merz said during a question-and-answer session in parliament, noting that a conference in Rome on Thursday will also discuss the issue.
Merz said that German aid to Ukraine won’t fail for financial reasons.
He added that “the only place where we really have a bottleneck at the moment is in the production of military material, weapons and material.”
He then indicated that the next step will be attempting to reach an agreement with the U.S. on providing more air defense for Ukraine.
He didn’t offer more details.
But Merz’s spokesperson confirmed last week that the possibility of Berlin buying Patriot systems from the U.S. and passing them on to Ukraine is an option under consideration.
