If you are, David Bowie is a huge international star and a fantastically talented figure, Guy Barker the trumpet player is a fantastically talented figure but he is not as well known as David Bowie. I think it is great that Guy Barker, or the lesser known people get the same attention in a world-wide arena, that David Bowie does. I think that is a very good thing."

It is the one award ceremony where you are going to get people that the mainstream have not necessarily heard of. People that are none the less very talented. People who have been around for a little while that have never got their dues, like The Doves. It really does focus in on music, and British music of course is very eclectic this year particularly. That can only be a positive thing for British music. Hopefully raise all of British music’s profile."

SOT Joanna McGregor, including soundbite: "This is very interesting for me to find myself with all these different pop groups. l know because I love pop music and I go out to pop gigs quite a lot. But that is fantastic and some of the stuff on my album, some of it, you would not say that this is pop music so it is great to be in this company."

SOT Simon Frith – chairman, including soundbite: "Our experience is that artists like being nominated for this because they genuinely feel that it’s people who have listened to their record and liked it rather than because they have already sold X amount of records or because the record company has hyped them or whatever. So I am always happy that we retain some sort of credibility. For small artists it means they can go to their record label and say look these people believe in our record, you should. For big artists I think it is just the satisfaction that yes their music is still respected. "
