1. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Richard Blumenthal, (D) Connecticut:
“July is going to be the magic month for bone-crushing sanctions on Vladimir Putin. He better get ready because his economy, already on its heels, is going to be hit hard by these sanctions."
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Lindsey Graham, (R) South Carolina:
“It’s very important we change the game with Putin. He’s not responding in a positive way. President Trump has earnestly reached out to Putin. I applaud his efforts to end this brutal blood bath in Ukraine. But it takes willing partners. Ukraine has been willing, Putin has not.”

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Markwayne Mullin, (R) Oklahoma:
“There’s definitely bipartisan support on it. What Lindsey and myself and the leader want to make sure is that we’re not getting ahead of the president and the State Department."
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Mike Rounds, (R) South Dakota:
“So far, I think you’ll find in the Senate broad support for Ukraine. I think the president, trying to be a mediator, just simply hasn’t had the success that all of us hoped he would have. Now it’s time to face the fact that Mr. Putin wants war. He has no intention of stopping, as many of us have said from day one.”

STORYLINE:
Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator. Richard Blumenthal have introduced a bill that would place new sanctions on Russia.

“July is going to be the magic month for bone-crushing sanctions on Vladimir Putin. He better get ready because his economy, already on its heels, is going to be hit hard by these sanctions that I anticipate we will adopt very soon in the United States Senate,” Blumenthal said.

Conversations between senators and the White House are ongoing, but the idea for the bill currently has bipartisan support.

“There’s definitely bipartisan support on it. What Lindsey and myself and the leader want to make sure is that we’re not getting ahead of the President and the State Department,” Sen. Markwayne Mullin, (R) Oklahoma said.

Sen. Mike Rounds, (R) Oklahoma, says Trump trying to be a mediator hasn’t been as successful as he’d hoped.

“I think the president, trying to be a mediator, just simply hasn’t had the success that all of us hoped he would have. Now it’s time to face the fact that Mr. Putin wants war. He has no intention of stopping, as many of us have said from day one,” Rounds said.
