“I knew that the water was coming. We didn’t know how bad it was going to be. We didn’t know how fast it was going to come up, but we knew it was coming.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Jon Meredith, co-owner, Sweet Eats:
“We are an agritourism farm where people come out to enjoy fun, farm related activities and, Fall fest. October is the most busy time of year for us. So we have certain things that we have to do at certain times of the year in order to pull off the festivals that we do. And with this happening in July, I’m very thankful because it’s, happened in the best time of year for us. however, that has delayed a lot of our crop plantings and trying to get prepped for our fall festival as our focus has shifted on cleaning up.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Jon Meredith, co-owner, Sweet Eats:
“We’ve been rotating into Christmas trees. That’s the, the block behind us. And when the floodwaters came up,, the current gets stronger and stronger, the higher the water goes. And the Christmas trees have all started to lay down. And, as the water just passes over them and, they don’t stand back up very easily. So my staff currently is going through while the soil moisture is high, going through and trying to straighten up all the trees. So that way they can continue to grow straight.”

“I’ve owned the land since 2013. 12 years or so. And over those 12 years, this is the fourth flood event that we have seen. this is the worst one that I’ve been a part of. But I know that there have been worse before.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Boyd Clark, owner, Clark Ostrich Farms:
“Ostriches, like, they don’t like a lot of rain. They’re more of an arid type of livestock animals. And the young ones especially, all have to be put in barns and kept dry. They they can’t get wet and soaked. They don’t do well, especially when it rains for hours and hours. They are chilled down and their feathers aren’t such that they can stay real warmth in the wind.”
13. Various of ostrich egg in flood waters
14. SOUNDBITE (English) Boyd Clark, owner, Clark Ostrich Farms:
“It does increase a lot of work for us. It cuts down our egg production. They’ve almost quit lying completely through all of this, and the eggs we do get are all getting ruined because they’re being laid in mud and water.”

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Boyd Clark, owner, Clark Ostrich Farms:
“July is hot and dry here in Central Texas, usually a lot of 100 degree days and weeks, sometimes with no rain. I think last year we had had some drought issues and it went the whole summer. It’s very hot weather and no, no rain really does feature. So this is a very different year, almost the flip side of it, where we’ve had a fairly wet spring, wet early summer, which we’re blessed to have the rain. But you know, when it keeps raining like this day after day, it doesn’t stop and nothing can dry out.”
