Rights for same-sex couples in Hong Kong | BBC News

A bill that offers limited legal rights to same-sex couples in Hong Kong that were married abroad has gone through its first reading in Hong Kong’s legislative council.

The city’s high court ruled in 2023 that the authority must introduce a legal framework that will allow same-sex civil unions.

The government would allow same-sex couples to register in Hong Kong provided they were already married abroad, and one of them is a Hong Kong resident.

If these conditions were met they would be allowed certain rights such as being able to register and de-register a relationship, look after their partner’s medical needs and make decisions on end-of-life care if they pass away.

But the government have said marriages that are registered in Hong Kong will remain between a man and a woman.
