So, we took all these details into consideration in the modern version and at the same time, we considered the beauty of Islamic architecture, the local, detailed architecture of Mosul, and the inspiration from heritage."

STORYLINE:
Construction work is almost complete at a historic shrine destroyed by Islamic State militants in northern Iraq in 2014 that is believed to be the burial place of the Prophet Jonah.

The militants damaged the centuries-old mosque after they took control of Mosul.

The construction work being carried out for the past two years is funded by volunteers and donors through Faal al-Khairat Association, a local NGO.

"This mosque has its own special symbolism for the people of Mosul and for all of the Iraqi people as Nebi Younis (Prophet Jonah) is considered one of the most important prophets in the city," said Jamal Nizar, a construction supervisor.

According to both the Bible and the Quran, Prophet Jonah was swallowed by a whale and survived.

The shrine was built on an archaeological site dating back to the 8th century B.C. and attracted religious pilgrims from multiple faiths around the world.

"We have memories of when all types of sick people would visit Nebi Younis (shrine) as well as women who couldn’t get pregnant. Men did too, from all provinces of Iraq," said Mohammed Ali Sultan, a visitor from Mosul.

The mosque was among dozens of historical and heritage sites destroyed by IS militants after their June 2014 onslaught.

The militants blew up the shrine after they took control of Mosul in 2014.
