SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Eduardo Cordoba, engineer, 55:
"The (Mexican) government is allowing it since it is paying tribute (referring to Mexico sending 10,000 National Guard troops to their shared border to crack down on drug trafficking and illegal immigration) to him to keep (Donald Trump) happy, but that is not right. They should also have a firmer and less measured stance in the face of these types of situations that will affect the country in the future."

7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Esteban Martínez, retired, 52:
"I think that (Donald Trump) is a person who lacks the capacity to look after his country, and aside from harming his country, he is harming other countries. He is putting tariffs on everyone. I think Mexico should be more energetic (in being more firm against Trump’s tariffs)."

STORYLINE:
Mexicans quickly weighed in to a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump announcing new tariffs to be imposed on Mexico.

President Donald Trump on Saturday announced he’s levying tariffs of 30% against the European Union and Mexico starting Aug. 1, a move that could cause massive upheaval between the United States and two of its biggest trade partners.

"They (tariffs) are very bad. (Donald Trump) is constantly threatening us with tariffs for everything, for anything and it is a 30% that affects everyone," said Griselda Belman, a homemaker. "For everything it is tariffs for this, tariffs for that, for every import or export that we do it is a lot."

Trump detailed the planned tariffs in letters posted to his social media account.

In his letter to Mexico’s leader, President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump acknowledged that the country has been helpful in stemming the flow of undocumented migrants and fentanyl into the United States.

But he said the country has not done enough to stop North America from turning into a “Narco-Trafficking Playground.”

Eduardo Cordoba, an engineer, said the Mexican president needs to take a firmer stance.

The letters come in the midst of an on-and-off Trump threat to impose tariffs on countries and right an imbalance in trade.

The Mexico tariff, if it goes into effect, could replace the 25% tariffs on Mexican goods that do not comply with the existing U.S.-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement.
